From Envelope to Inmate

The Hidden Path of Contraband

Public Safety and corrections staff are on the front lines preventing contraband from infiltrating communities and inmate populations. Despite rigorous mail screening protocols, harmful substances continue to slip through — putting lives at risk and undermining facility security.

KEY BENEFITS OF MAILSECUR FOR CORRECTIONS

Enhance officer safety, preserve privacy and confidentiality, reduce screening time, and detect more contraband

Officer & Inmate Safety

With MailSecur, operators see what's inside mail, small parcels, and soft objects – without opening them. RaySecur’s safe terahertz imaging T-ray technology allows users to hold and manipulate unopened items in field of view for a live 4D video of concealed contents. This provides the ability to move the object for alternate views of hidden contents, improving contraband detection. T-ray technology also provides much higher sensitivity than X-ray to detect small amounts of powders, liquids, and even drug-treated or laced papers inside sealed mail items.

Persevering Privacy and Confidentiality

With MailSecur, operators can quickly detect suspicious contents inside sealed mail items. It is the only solution that can do so without the need to open protected mail, such as legal and religious mail, meeting strict privacy and confidentiality requirements for privileged communications. Outside of corrections, MailSecur is used to screen mail for world leaders, Fortune 500 companies, and government agencies requiring the same high standards of confidentiality.

Reduce screening time

Detect anomalies in seconds. Correctional facilities face chronic staffing shortages and high turnover. MailSecur’s live terahertz video imaging allows anyone to quickly get up to speed and become proficient with minimal training. Staff can quickly screen mail – letters, magazines, newspapers, small parcels – and complete the task in a fraction of the time required for marginally effective manual processes largely used today.

Detect more contraband

MailSecur allows corrections staff to detect the smallest, hardest-to-find drugs that X-ray and other screening techniques can't find. Drug detection can be performed without the need to open personal and legal mail – helping to keep officers, staff, and inmates safe. While drugs are a real concern, they're not the only one. Inmates also try to get their hands on weapons, electronic components, and other contraband—increasing overall risk. With mobile screening ability, you can detect contraband within the mailroom, housing units, and at intake.

MULTIPLE CONTRABAND ENTRY POINTS

Even with strong perimeter and entry point defenses, correctional facilities face unique vulnerabilities in their mail flows and housing and intake procedures. MailSecur stops contraband in the mail. Plus it’s mobile, battery powered configuration allows it to be used throughout the facility to detect contraband regardless of how it was smuggled in.

LEGAL MAIL

Legal mail is broadly classified as correspondence from an inmate's legal counsel or the court system. It is safeguarded under the Constitution and can't be sent electronically or opened without cause. It also must be delivered in a timely manner. Because of this, fraudulent legal mail has become a key avenue for smuggling contraband and dangerous substances into facilities.

PERSONAL ITEMS

Incarcerated individuals receive a large number of letters and packages from friends and family. These communications may be the only touch points some inmates have with the outside world. Yet, corrections facilities struggle with effectively screening such a large volume of mail for concealed contraband.

HOUSING AND INTAKE

Corrections staff conduct daily searches across facilities to uncover drugs and contraband hidden in everyday items, from bedding and clothing to food items, toiletries, and more. These manual inspections — even with K-9 support — are disruptive and often ineffective. Small quantities of drugs, treated papers, and tiny electronics frequently evade detection, putting the safety of inmates and officers at risk.

Key Features of MailSecur 4D T-Ray Screening

Dynamic 4D T-ray Imaging

See inside mail and packages in real time, capturing length, width, depth, and motion to reveal hidden powders, liquids, electronics, among other threats.

Detects What Others Miss

Uncovers threats too small or subtle for conventional systems, including a wide range of drugs and illicit substances. As an imaging system, grains of powder are visible without the need to chemical libraries.

Safe, Non-Ionizing Technology

Unlike X-ray systems, T-rays produce no harmful radiation. MailSecur can be deployed in any facility without special permits, shielding, or inspections.

Detect Drug-Treated and Laced Paper

Software algorithms tailored for specific detection applications and AI image enhancement, combined with ongoing updates, ensures your team has the latest capabilities at their fingertips.

Easy to Use by Existing Staff

Simple interface enables staff to easily manipulate envelopes and parcels while screening to rotate and zoom for detail, making it easy to detect concealed anomalies with minimal training.

DHS SAFETY Act Designated

MailSecur is officially designated as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology (QATT) by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under the Safety Act.

FIND CONCEALED DRUG-LACED PAPERS

DETECTION MADE SIMPLE.

Drug-laced or treated papers, may be sprayed, soaked, dipped, or printed with tainted ink, and are nearly undetectable, making them an ideal substrate for smuggling. Any liquified narcotic, synthetic, or chemical intoxicant can be used, including K2/K3, spice, fentanyl, meth, and other variants, as well as common chemicals including bug spray and formaldehyde. Treating the paper changes how it interacts with T-rays, allowing MailSecur to detect the anomaly. Correctional officers can quickly screen and clear normal mail while efficiently flagging mail containing papers that have been tampered with – all without opening the mail item.
